Maxillary Expansion

Maxillary expansion is a commonly used orthodontic procedure to correct transverse maxillary deficiency, often seen as posterior crossbite, crowding, and a narrow arch.It works by increasing the width of the maxilla through either skeletal expansion by opening the midpalatal suture or dentoalveolar changes by moving teeth laterally.The choice of method depends on the patient's age and skeletal maturity.Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is preferred in growing patients and produces more skeletal changes,while slow maxillary expansion (SME) uses lighter forces for gradual dentoalveolar adaptation.In adults, surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) or miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) may be required for effective results.Common appliances include Hyrax, Haas, quad helix and nickel-titanium expanders.Beyond correcting occlusion, maxillary expansion also improves nasal airway function and facial balance.However, it may be associated with discomfort, dental tipping, and relapse if not properly retained.Therefore, careful diagnosis, appropriate appliance selection, and a proper retention phase are essential to ensure long-term stability and successful outcome.
