Detailed information

Global warming is confronting societies with urgent questions about their futures: knowledge of constantly rising emissions and growing concern about catastrophic tipping points lead to hopes for a fundamental change in politics on the one hand, while on the other, many people feel overwhelmed due to their apparent powerlessness. In recent years, this has led to a growing need to make possible futures more graspable and predictable. As a result, not only has research into planetary futures increased, but also the search for ways to influence or 'fix' them.

This catalog accompanying the exhibition Fixing Futures. Planetary Futures between Speculation and Control explores these attempts to predict futures and analyzes the relationship between the opposing poles of radical uncertainty and the desire for control. In a conversation between the exhibition organizers, scientists, and artists that focuses on weather and climate control, planetary environmental problems, geoengineering, and decolonial futures, visions of the future are mapped out and the importance of planetary approaches emphasized.

The exhibition Fixing Futures. Planetary Futures between Speculation and Control takes place from April 5th to August 31st, 2025 at the MGGU - Giersch Museum of the Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main.
