Detailed information

A dental implant is a surgical component that connects with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis, such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis, or to serve as an orthodontic anchor. The biological process of osseointegration, in which substances like titanium develop a close link with bone, is the foundation for contemporary dental implants. A dental prosthetic is added after the implant fixture has been positioned so that it is likely to osseointegrated. Before either the dental prosthetic (a tooth, bridge, or denture) is linked to the implant or an abutment is placed that will hold a dental prosthetic/crown, osseointegration must have had a varying period of healing time.
