Weltmaßstäbe
Inhaltlich orientieren sich die Ausstellung und das Buch dazu am legendären Kurzfilm Powers of Ten (Zehn hoch, 1977) von Charles und Ray Eames. Der Film demonstriert die von der Naturwissenschaft im 20. Jahrhundert eingefuührten Größenordnungen (40 Zehnerpotenzen von 10 hoch 24 bis 10 hoch minus 16 Meter), mit denen unser Universum anhand der Faktoren Raum und Zeit beschrieben werden kann. Aufgezeigt werden 42 von einer Kamera aufgezeichnete Stationen zwischen Makrokosmos (Sonnensystem) und Mikrokosmos (Innere einer Hand). So tauchen auch Leser und Besucher von außen, aus dem Kosmos, in unsere Welt ein, erkundet sie und stellt fest, dass der Mensch mit seinem Glauben und Streben nach Fortschritt alles verändert hat.
Erzählt wird in lose aneinandergereihten, aber doch auseinander entstehenden Kapiteln (Welt und Kosmos, Glaube und Mythos, Natur und Mensch, Urbane Lebenswelten, Existenz und Endlichkeit) eine Geschichte unserer Welten der äußeren, die uns umgibt, und der inneren, die in uns steckt und ihrer Bausteine: den Weltmolekuülen.
World measurements
The thematic bias of the exhibition and the book is directed to the legendary short film Powers of Ten (1977) by Charles and Ray Eames. The film demonstrates the scales introduced by twentieth century sciences (a total of forty powers of ten, ascending in sequence to 1024, then descending all the way to 10-16 metres), and those with which our universe can be described in terms of the factors of time and space. Forty-two separate camera positions record the spectrum, ranging from the macrocosm (solar system) to the microcosm (inside of a hand). In an analogous way, the reader dives into our world from the outside, from the cosmos, and investigates its natural surface until he realises that man, with his belief in and pursuit of progress changes everything. Narrated here, in several loosely connected and yet independent chapters (world and cosmos, faith and myth, nature and man, urban environment, and existence and finiteness), is a veritable history of our worlds the external world which surrounds us, and the internal world which resides in us, with all ist components: world molecules.
